Director
Presidio Heritage Center
San Francisco, CA
Summary
Since its founding by the Spanish in 1776, the Presidio of San Francisco has played an important role in the history of the Bay Area and the United States. The Presidio’s historical significance was acknowledged when it was declared a national historic landmark district in 1962, and later in 1972, when the base was preserved as a national park site. Today the Presidio is managed as a national park site by the Presidio Trust, a single purpose federal agency dedicated to preserving the Presidio as an enduring resource for all Americans.
In order to make the Presidio ’s history accessible to a broad cross section of local residents and national visitors alike, the Presidio Trust has undertaken a process to develop a state-of-the-art heritage program – a program focused on the many historic, cultural and environmental stories of the Presidio, the role the Presidio has played in American history, and on the many individuals who have shaped it.

- A large and diverse nearby urban population that can reach the Presidio relatively easily
- A rich collection of nearby academic institutions and museums focused on history, cultural heritage and the arts
